741 policemen, 540 doctors get coronavirus infections in BD

Dhaka, May 02 -The number of doctors infected with coronavirus in the country reached 540 on Saturday, said Bangladesh Doctors Foundation (BDF), a forum of physicians. Altogether 741 members of Bangladesh Police were infected with coronavirus until Saturday afternoon, according to police headquarters.
Five members of the law enforcement force died of COVID-19 so far, UNB reported.
“Among the infected doctors, 387 are from Dhaka division alone,” said Nirupam Das, the chief administrator of the foundation, who described the situation as alarming.
BDF data showed that among Dhaka division doctors, 230 worked at government hospitals and 136 at private hospitals.
Of the total infected doctors, 337 got infected while treating patients at government hospitals and 139 are affiliated with private hospitals.
Meanwhile, 55 doctors were diagnosed with coronavirus in Mymensingh division, 14 in Chattogram, 29 in Khulna, 10 in Barishal, six in Sylhet and seven in Rangpur division.
Dr Nirupam said doctors should be careful while disposing of the personal protective gears to be safe from the virus.
Meanwhile, 232 police members were diagnosed with the virus in the last 24 hours, the sources said.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) recorded the highest number of coronavirus cases. A total of 356 policemen of DMP tested positive for coronavirus.
Currently, 1,250 policemen are in quarantine while 174 are being treated at isolation units.
Besides, 57 patients made full recovery, the sources said.
Members of Bangladesh Police, Armed forces, and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), along with other agencies have been jointly working to ensure social distancing.
As the number of infected police personnel increased, the PHQ asked its members to ensure their own protection while performing duties.
Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police Headquarters (Media) Md Sohel Rana said they are trying to ensure the protection of police members.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed provided protective gears to DMP.
Bangladesh has so far recorded 8,790 cases and 175 deaths from the coronavirus. – News Desk with UNB
