Moving JS for caretaker: We avoided the trap: BNP

The government’s apparent keenness for an Opposition adjournment motion on the caretaker issue was a carefully conceived trap and the BNP did well not to step into it, BNP leader and once Opposition chief whip Rafiqul Islam Miah said on Saturday.Miah’s riposte follows Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s allegations that the BNP has foreclosed the option for a dialogue on the nature of the poll-time administration by withdrawing the adjournment motion on the issue.
“The Awami League would have sunk the motion by its huge parliamentary majority — once and for all,” Miah said.” They are capable of vetoing our proposal and that is what they would have done, bury the issue forever.”
The Awami League has 230 seats in the parliament and the ruling alliance headed by it accounts for 262 seats in the 300-member house.
With this huge majority, it managed to get the 15th constitution amendment scrapping the caretaker system passed and accepted as law.
But Miah did not explain why BNP lawmaker from Noakhali-1 Mahbub Uddin Khokon submitted the adjournment motion supporting a restoration of the caretaker system for discussion in the parliament.
He neither clarified whether Khokon’s was a personal move or one approved by the party leadership — and if so, why was the decision to withdraw it taken later.
