Dhaka – BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi yesterday said the party has taken a right decision to refrain from attending the ruling Awami League’s national council.
“The BNP decision not to attend the Awami League council was appropriate,” he said while talking to reporters at party’s central office.Rizvi said, BNP has not joined the council as there is no democratic environment in the country. “If there was a democratic atmosphere they could consider their joining the AL council,” he said.
The BNP leader, who was released from Kashimpur prison on October 19, accused the AL leaders of making aggressive comments against party chairperson Khaleda Zia few days ago.
He mentioned that the AL did not attend their council rather they had tried to obstruct it.
Rizvi also said the party leaders and activists are being killed and becoming victims of enforced disappearances; they are also being implicated in false cases and subjected to harassment.
“In such an environment, the BNP cannot attend the council with its backbones,” he said.
Rizvi said those who are running the country are not the peoples representatives and they consider themselves landlords.
He criticized the ruling AL illuminating the city with colourful lights to organize the council. A party council cannot be held in such a manner, he added.
Different political parties attended the AL council but the BNP did not turn up there despite party chairperson Khaleda Zia and secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir being invited.
Informed sources said Khaleda Zia did not give her consent to join the AL council. Staff Reporter
