Bagerhat – A coal-laden cargo vessel capsized near Fairway Buoy in Mongla in the Bay of Bengal on Friday.
Abdur Rahman Biswas, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Mongla Police Station, said the cargo vessel named ‘MV Lady Marry’ sank in the bay near Hiron point while heading towards Noapara, Jessore after loading 1000 tones of coal from the mother vessel in Mongla around 9:15 am.
Fourteen crew of the vessel were rescued by the vessels passing through the area after the incident.
Ali Ullah, harbor master commander of Mongla Port, said the vessel anchored at Fairway Buoy in the Bay of Bengal on December 22.
He also said the owners of the vessels would be asked to retrieve the vessel within a fixed time. If the owners failed then the port authorities will retrieve the vessel.
On December 9, 2014, an oil-tanker carrying 350,000 litres of furnace oil sank in a river in the Sundarbans after it was hit by a cargo vessel which affected plants and wildlife seriously.
Besides, on October 28, 2015 and March 19, 2016, two coal-carrying vessels sank in the Passur and the Shela rivers respectively. -UNB
