
President Abdul Hamid on Wednesday formed a six-member search committee for reconstituting the new Election Commission (EC) and sent the names to the Cabinet Division for publishing a gazette notification, said President’s Press Secretary Joynal Abedin.Four of the committee members are Comptroller and Auditor General of Bangladesh Masud Ahmed, Chairman of Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC) Dr Muhammed Sadique, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Chittagong University (CU) Prof Dr Shireen Akhter and Dhaka University (DU) English Department teacher Prof Dr Syed Manzoorul Islam, said official sources.
Two other members of the committee will be taken from the Supreme Court — one justice from the Appellate Division and another one from the High Court Division. Chief Justice SK Sinha will send the list, the sources added.
The Cabinet Division will issue a gazette notification anytime soon publishing the six names of the search committee members within one or two days.
Earlier, President Abdul Hamid held month-long talks with political parties on the formation of a new Election Commission (EC). The dialogue ended on Wednesday last.
President Hamid held talks with 31 political parties, including the ruling Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party (Ershad).
During the talks, the political parties separately placed a series of proposals and most of them proposed enacting a law for the EC formation.
