Dhaka, Feb 5 – Detectives arrested Halimul Haque Miru, mayor of Shahjadpur municipality in Siranganj, from Shyamoli area in the capital on Sunday night in connection with the killing of a journalist.A joint team of Detective Branch of Sirajganj and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested him from the house of a relative Miru around 10pm, said Masudur Rahman, DMP deputy commissioner (media).
Earlier, police arrested Miru’s two brothers — Hasibul Haque Pintu, a local BCL leader, and Habibul Haque Mintu, general secretary of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) of Pabna district — in connection with the killing of the journalist.
Abdul Hakim Shimul, Shahjadpur upazila correspondent of vernacular daily the Dainik Samakal, sustained bullet injuries during a clash between two associate bodies of Awami League in Shahjadpur on Thursday. Later, he died on the way to Dhaka on Friday afternoon.
The local MP of the ruling AL Hasibul Haque Swapan publicly said at the funeral of journalist that the latter was killed by a bullet shot by Mayor Miru. Several other local leaders of the ruling party said they had tried to debar Miru from firing shots but he did it and fired sevberal shots.
Sirajganj police also later told jourlanists that Shimul was killed in the firing from the Mayor’s gun. – GW News Desk with UNB
