Dhaka – The BNP on Thursday called upon the people to get untied and build a strong resistance against all undemocratic and anti-state moves of the government.“We urge all people from all strata of society to stand up and raise their voice and crate resistance against all the misdeeds of the government,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Speaking at a sit-in programme in the city protesting the hike of gas prices, he sees no reason and logic behind increasing the prices and demanded of the government to cancel the decision.
“Nothing has happened in the country that requires gas price hike. The gas price cannot be increased by any means. Rather it should be brought down. It is the demand of all,” he added.
As part of the countrywide programme, the city BNP arranged the two-hour long sit-in programme that began at 10:00am at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh premises protesting hike of gas prices.
Mirza Alamgir termed the government decision to increase the gas prices as anti-people and illogical and said they (government) are taking such decisions as they are not accountable to the people.
“This government is not a government of the people. They are signing many agreements being submissive. These are going against the interests of the people,” he said.
Regarding the next polls, he said any election dropping BNP and its chairperson Khaleda Zia will not be accepted to the people and they would resist it.
“We will force the government through a peaceful movement to hold a an acceptable election under a neutral and non-partisan election-time government.
Several thousand leaders and activists bearing festoons and placards inscribed with different slogans against gas prices hike joined the programme ended at 12:00 noon.
BNP standing committee members Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Gayashewar Chandra Ray, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, vice-chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo , Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, among others, also spoke on the occasion.
Our reporters and correspondents report BNP’s sit-in programme were observed in different parts of the country protesting the gas price hike.
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said despite police obstruction in some places including Rajshahi their programme was observed peacefully across the country. – Staff Reporter
