Thousands of extremely poor people living in 12 remote char unions of Sadar and Raipura upazilas have successfully overcome abject poverty through various income generation activities.
Sources with Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said most of the people here have achieved success through farming groundnut, sweet potato and various vegetables in the vast tracts of sandy barren char lands in Meghna and Arialkhan river basins.
Besides, a number of poor people living in the char villages of the
district have also achieved self-reliance through rearing of livestock in the char lands and fish farming and duck rearing in the rivers.
DAE official Lotafat Hossain told BSS that the department provided
training to the char people on groundnut, sweet potato and various vegetables farming and seeds and pesticide free of cost.
As a result, the farmers have brought about a revolutionary change in the rural economy of the district, he said.
Chairman of Raipura Upazila Parishad Mijanur Rahman Chowdhury said now the people of char villagers are leading a completely changed life with achieving hygienic sanitation and access to pure drinking water and reducing malnutrition of their family members, BSS, Narsingdi.
