Dhaka – The next Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) beginning in Dhaka on November 1 will focus on Rohingya crisis and its solutions.“The Rohingya crisis is not only an internal matter of Myanmar. Rather it has turned into a regional crisis. Discussion on the solution to the problems will be held in the side event along with the prime session of the CPC,” said media committee of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) at a view exchange meeting yesterday.
The committee formed comprising Members of Parliament (MPs) to mark the 63rd CPC-2017 informed that 144 CPA branches in 52 Commonwealth countries would take part in the 8-day conference.
Abul Kalam Azad, a member of the media committee, said that the 63rd CPC jointly organized by Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad and CPA is being held in Dhaka from Wednesday.
He said Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain is the Patron of the CPA and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would discharge duties as Vice Patron for 2017.
Kazi Nabil Ahmed, MP, Fazilatunnesa Bappi, MP and Tanvir Imam, MP, among others also took part in the meeting held at Parliament Members’ Club.
The committee informed that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would inaugurate the 63rd CPC at the South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad at 10:00 am on November 5. CPA chairperson and Speaker of Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will preside over it. The other events will take place at the Hotel Radisson Blu Dhaka.
Over 550 delegates including 56 speakers, 23 deputy speakers, and lawmakers are expected to attend the CPC, said the committee.
The events include executive committee meeting, commonwealth women parliament steering committee meeting, small branches conference, sub-committee meetings, regional group meetings, general assembly and eight workshops.
As the first woman and Bengali, Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury had been elected chairperson of CPA in 2014 for three years. – Staff Reporter
