Karnaphuli tunnel construction to begin by end of fiscal: Quader

Communication Minister Obaidul Quader said the construction work of the first ever tunnel under the Karnaphuli river will begin by the end of the current fiscal year.The Communications Minister said this while talking to the reporters after visiting renovation work of Baddarhat-Karnaphuli link road in the port city on Thursday.
The project will be implemented with the financial assistance of China involving Tk 5500 core. The funding proposal is now at Economic Relations Division (ERD), he said.
The Minister also said the feasibility study of the tunnel has already been completed. After constructing the tunnel a new city will be built up on the other side of the Karnaphuli River, he said.
The Minister said the Chinese Government is keen to develop a specialized industrial zone on the other side of the Karnaphuli River using the economic prospects of the port city and another feasibility study in this regard will begin soon.
Later, the Minister inaugurated the renovation work of Anawara-Banshkhali road and visited progress of the construction of Aktaruzzaman Babu Bridge. – UNB
