Shahbagh Police Station in the capital found no basis in the case filed by Awami League MP Golam Maula Rony against The Independent Television Chairman Salman F Rahman and two of its journalists.Sub-inspector Abu Zafar of the Police Station submitted the final report of the case to Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka on Tuesday, while Magistrate Shahriar Mahmud Adnan passed order fixing August 21 for hearing.
The case record says, the report recommends that Salman Rahman and the journalists- Imtiaz Momin and Mohsin Mukul be cleared of the charges.
The final report also recommended that action be taken against the lawmaker for filing a false case, and The Independent TV Chairman and the two journalists be freed from the charges.
MP Rony lodged a complaint with Shahbagh Police Station on July 20, accusing The Independent TV Chairman Salman F Rahman and others of extortion, blackmailing, attempt-to-murder, and abduction.
Later The Independent TV management filed a case accusing Rony of assaulting Imtiaz Momin Sony and cameraperson Mohsin Mukul of Independent’s crime investigative programme ‘Talash’, at his Topkhana Road Office, where they went to interview him.
Rony had surrendered before the court and secured bail on July 21 in the case.
However, Dhaka CMM Court Magistrate Shahriar Mahmud Adnan after hearing a plea by the plaintiff of the case against Rony issued a warrant for his arrest canceling his bail on July 24.
The Independent TV Assistant Manager Yunus Ali had lodged a general diary (GD) with the Police Station alleging that he received threat over telephone from Rony.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested the ruling party MP on that very day, the July 24 from the capital’s Badda area.
The following day, the CMM Court of Dhaka sent Rony to the jail rejecting his bail petition, when the police produced him to the court.
