Police arrested three more people on Tuesday in connection with a case filed for torching 50 houses of indigenous families in Matiranga upazila on Saturday. The Officer-in-charge of Matiranga Police Station Moin Uddin said police in their overnight drive arrested the three people, including two listed criminals, in connection with Saturday’s violence, raising the number of the total arrestees in this connection to seven.
Those arrested on Tuesday were identified as Manir Hossain, Amir Hossain and Jahangir Alam. Anil Chakma, one of the victims, filed the case against 175 people, including 30 identified ones, with the police station on Monday.
On Saturday, around 50 houses of indigenous families were set on fire by some miscreants at Taindang in the upazila following the abduction of Md Kamal,32, a motorbike rider, from Taindang area.
The victims then deserted their houses and took shelter at No Man’s Land along the Bangladesh-India border.
Later, they returned to their homes after Sate Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Dipankar Talukdar on Sunday assured them of their security.
Meanwhile, the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) enforced a dawn-to-dusk road blockade progamme in the district on Monday demanding punishment of the attackers and compensation for the victims. – UNB
