HC asks govt to free park space occupied by Ansar-VDP

The High Court on Thursday directed government to free space of Shishu Park in Khilgaon B-block in the capital illegally occupied by Ansar-VDP within 90 days.

Besides, the HC ordered to renovate the park situated on two bigha land as a modern one.

An HC bench of Justice Sheikh Hasan Arif and Justice Md Badruzzaman came up with the order after hearing of a writ filed in the form of public interest litigation.

Chief executive of Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela) Syeda Rizwana Hasan stood for the writ and deputy attorney general Mokhlesur Rahman for the state.

Syeda Rizwana Hasan said that the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, authorities of Ansar VDP and Dhaka North City Corporation have been directed to implement the order.

She said that the authorities of Ansar-VDP leased the land from the government on 1987. Later, the lease was cancelled in 1996. Later, the lease was again renamed by SabujmatiTrust in 2000.

Following the protest of local people, the lease was cancelled in 2004 which was forcibly occupied by Ansar VDP during the rule of military-backed caretaker government in 2007.

The writ was filed in 2008.
