DHAKA: Opposition BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday categorically said BNP would not take part the next general elections under the partisan government.The spokesperson for the party came with the assertion in an immediate reaction after Prime Minister Sheikh Hsina addressed a press conference in the evening.
Her announcement of holding the next general election under the present Awami League-led government has deepened the political crisis, said acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday.
In an immediate reaction, he told reporters, “Everyone had hoped today that the Prime Minister will show the way-out of the current crisis and give directions. But the nation is disappointed as her statement intensified the crisis.”
Mirza Fakhrul also renewed party’s call for restoring the provision for election under caretaker government.
He said, “If the next general elections is held under a partisan government, it will push the country towards instability and uncertainty.”
Refuting the Prime Minister’s remark that the next elections will be held as per the constitution, he said, whatever the government said the people believe that “a free and fair poll is not possible unless it is held under a non-partisan government”.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged people not to be confused at the negative propaganda being carried out by a vested quarter and reiterated her government’s firm stance to hold the next election as per the constitution. – banglanews24.com
But Mirza Fakhrul hoped the government will ‘come to its senses’.
