Dhaka, Nov 17 – The opposition BNP yesterday demanded of the government to make public all the agreements and memorandum of understandings (MoUs) signed with India during the recent Prime Minister visit to the neighbouring country.
A two-member BNP delegation yesterday handed a letter to the Prime Minister’s Office, confirmed BNP chairperson’s media wing officer Shairul Kabir Khan.
In the letter signed by party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the BNP also sought a copy of the agreements and MoUs signed between the two countries.
The BNP delegation comprising joint secretaries general Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal and Khairul Kabir Khokon took a letter in this regard to the Prime Minister’s Office in Dhaka at about 11:40 am.
Briefing reporters, Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal said they took the letter on behalf of the party and handed over to Prime Minister’s special assistant Barrister Biplob Barua.
The letter alleged no agreement signed with India has been public or not been placed before parliament resulting in the people are in the dark about the agreements.
Depriving people of their fundamental rights to be informed about national important agreements is the violation of the constitution. We call for remove questions and suspicions of the people by placing all the agreements signed with India and other countries before parliament and making those public, said the letter.
The BNP sent the letter to the premier in light of the decision of the party standing committee meeting held on November 2 at the chairperson’s Gulshan office.
After the meeting, the BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told media that under the Right to Information Act, they would also write to the Information Commission for details of the deals.
