BAU closed after 10-year-old dies in BCL battle

Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) in Mymensingh was closed for an indefinite period on Saturday hours after a minor boy was killed in a gunfight between rival factions of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the ruling Awami League, in the campus.

The Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) in Mymensingh was closed for an indefinite period on Saturday hours after a boy was killed in a gunfight between rival factions of pro-government students on the campus.

All students were asked to vacate their dormitories by 8pm on Saturday.

The dead was identified as Rabbi, son of Dulal Mia, of nearby Boira village, adjacent to the university.

The authorities took the decision in the afternoon to avoid more violence after the 10-year-old boy was killed and at least 20 others injured in a violent clash, at the Rail Crossing area, between the two groups of the pro-AL BCL.

Professor Rafiqul Islam, the Vice-Chancellor, told bdnews24.com that the two groups were fighting for control on the campus.

The bloody clashes began at around 12:30pm between the groups led by the BCL BAU unit President Shamsuddin Al Azad and General Secretary Rafiquzzaman Emon.

Both the groups used sharp weapons and firearms, witnesses said.

The campus had been tense for the past three days following an alleged dispute over submission of tender documents for university construction works.

Rabbi received bullet injuries in his forehead. He was rushed to the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Among the injured, two students of the university – Joydev, 20, and Ahsan, 22, were admitted to the hospital in critical condition.

Kotwali Police OC Fazlul Karim told bdnews24.com that he knew about clashes and the killing.

Rabbi’s death prompted angry locals to attack two student dormitories — Shaheed Jamal Hossain Hall and Hussein Shahid Suhrawardi Hall.

Police sent in reinforcements to deal with the situation.bdnews24.com
