Robi Axiata Limited has appointed Supun Weerasinghe as its new Chief Executive Officer.
A media statement issued by the company’s Communications and Media Relations said the new CEO would assume the office in Jan next year, replacing the out-going CEO, Michael Kuehner, who has decided to retire.
Kuehner, however, will continue to be a member of the company’s Board of Directors, said the statement.
Supun has been serving as the Axiata Group Chief Strategy Officer since Feb 2013. He also functions as the Head of Network Transformation Strategic Business Unit under which he provides leadership to Group Technology, Carrier Collaboration and Axiata Intelligence Unit, mentioned the statement.
Prior to the Axiata Group, Supun was the Group Chief Operating Officer of Dialog Axiata, Sri Lanka’s mobile market leader.
Supun is a fellow member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), UK, and holds a B.Sc. in Accountancy and Financial Management from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka. He also has a MBA from the University of Western Sydney, Australia, and is an alumnus of the Harvard Business School, said the statement.
Lauding his leadership over the last four years, Axiata Berhad President and Group CEO Dato’ Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim was quoted saying in the statement: “I would like to thank Michael for his tremendous contributions in building the business. Under Michael’s stewardship Robi made a dramatic turnaround in financial performance in 2012, outperforming all their targets”.
“As Bangladesh embraces the internet era with the deployment of 3G services, I am confident that Supun and his team will steer the company towards a new phase of growth. We are confident that Supun would take Robi to greater heights.” – bdnwes24.com
