Canada is still hopeful of a dialogue between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Opposition Leader Khaleda Zia to find a way to resolve the country’s ongoing political crisis over polls-time government.
“We hope the Prime Minister and Khaleda Zia will hold a dialogue to resolve the ongoing political crisis and promote the country’s business,” Canadian High Commissioner in Dhaka Heather Cruden told a function at BGMEA Bhaban in the capital on Sunday.
The Canadian High Commission in Dhaka and Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) organised the function marking the launch of a book titled ‘International Standard Social Responsibility’.
Home Minister Dr Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir, BGMEA president Atiqul Islam, its vice president Shahidullah Azim and professor of Dhaka University Dr Syed Ferhad Anwar, among others, spoke on the occasion.
Heather Cruden said Canada is committed to supporting the Bangladesh government and its various partners in efforts to improve the working conditions in the readymade garment sector.
“This large and growing sector is critical to Bangladesh’s economy and responsible for significant increases in female employment and empowerment in the country.”
She said recent tragedies, including Rana Plaza factory collapse and Tazreen Fashion fire, brought to the forefront of the international community the serious and complex problems and challenges of the sector.
The envoy said improvement in the RMG sector requires major collective efforts and all have a role to play in maintaining the momentum with a focus on sustainable results.
Criticising the businessmen, Home Minister MK Alamgir said although the businessmen have a corporate social responsibility, the general people think that they never give any attention to it. –UNB
