Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) seized huge smuggle drugs from Elahinagar village under Sadar upazila of the district on Friday evening.
On a tip-off, a team of the elite force conducted a sudden raid in the village and seized 7,440 pieces of injection, 307 bottles of phensidyl and huge tablets from a truck. A case was filed in this connection. –BSS, Meherpur
Producing biogas in larger scale to eliminate energy problem stressed
Speakers in a function here stressed the need for producing biogas in a larger scale to eliminate country’s energy problem and to have a pollution free environment through utilizing domestic wastes.
“Biogas provides a clean and easily controlled source of renewable energy from organic waste materials for a small labour input, replacing firewood or fossil fuels benefiting the environment, reducing costs and contributing to working opportunity creation and social structure”, they said.
They made the comments while addressing a daylong orientation meeting on biogas at the training room of a local voluntary organization Chinnomul Mohila Samity (SMS) of the town recently.
Practical Action Bangladesh and SMS organized the meeting under the project of strengthening the innovative initiatives (Sanimart, Waste to Bio Gas) promoted under the urban component of SHEWAB and Waste to Compost in Gaibandha Town funded by Unicef and UKAID.
Deputy Commissioner M Zahurul Islam Rohel addressed the function as the chief guest and vice president of Gaibandha Press Club and district correspondent of national news agency Sarker M Shahiduzzaman was present as the special guest.
With executive director of SMS Morshedur Rahman in the chair, the function was also addressed, among others, by project manager of PAB Mahbubul Islam and news editor of a local newspaper the daily Ghagot Asaduzzaman Mamun.
The DC in his speech said biogas production in Gaibandha Municipality through combined waste management system is an innovative and epoch-making initiative of the organizations to improve urban and rural environment.
Earlier, the purpose and the objectives of the project were presented at the meeting by project officer Swapon Kumar Mali.
The long-term project was being implemented jointly here from November 2011 by Gaibandha Municipality, PAB and its partner organization SMS, he said. –BSS, Gaibandha
