A farmer was chopped to death by his rivals at Auchpara in Baghmara upazila on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Abdur Rahman, 55, son of Bhudai Mandal of the village.
Officer-in-charge of Baghmara Police Station Abdul Hamid said Abdur Rahman locked into an altercation with local Awami League leader Jahanagir Alam, of Hatkhujipur village, over irrigating a potato field at about 10am.
At one stage, Jahangir chopped Abdur Rahman with a spade indiscriminately, leaving him dead on the spot.
Jahangir went into hiding after the incident.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
