Issuing a warning that people will not accept one-sided polls, opposition BNP on Sunday called upon the Election Commission to take steps for holding a credible election with the participation of all parties.
“We urge the Election Commission to postpone the election schedule announced earlier and take measures for holding a meaningful election with the participation of all parties,” BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said in a statement.
He threatened that the country’s people will establish their voting and democratic rights through movement if the government does not shelve its plan for holding a unilateral election.
The BNP leader alleged that the government is pushing the country towards a severe uncertainty and instability by indiscriminate firing on the opposition leaders and activists and raiding their houses. He also alleged that the opposition is not allowing holding their democratic programmes while their central office is besieged by the law enforcers. “Under the uneasy undemocratic atmosphere, no question can be raised for arranging any election. Awami League has created such a situation with an evil design for hanging onto power for once and for all.” “The reconstituted cabinet of the AL-led grand alliance is governing the country illegally and unconstitutionally. This administration has no moral right to run the state,” Fakhrul added. The BNP acting secretary general said the Prime Minister and her cabinet members are using the state facilities, signing agreements, and taking policymaking decision, flouting the laws following announcement of the ‘so-called’ election schedule. Claiming that people take to the streets to realise their voting and democratic rights, he said the government is killing, repressing, arresting the demonstrators and filing ‘false’ cases against them using the law enforcers and ruling party cadres to suppress their legitimate movement. – UNB
