Kazi Zafar Ahmed is meeting Opposition Leader Khaleda Zia for the second time in a week after being expelled from the Jatiya Party. He went to meet the BNP Chairperson at her Gulshan office on Thursday evening amid an intense feud between the main opposition and the ruling Awami League over the national election.
Zafar was accompanied by several other leaders.
Jatiya Party Chairman Hussein Muhammad Ershad and party vice-chairman Kaza Zafar Ahmed expelled each other from the party over a dispute on the party’s then decision to participate in the upcoming 10th parliamentary election.
He proclaimed himself Chairman of the party and declared Golam Mosih the Secretary General of a new committee formed soon after.
Zafar had also announced that he was joining the Opposition’s movement for a non-party poll-time government following his meeting with Khaleda at her office on Nov 29.
Several days after expelling Zafar, HM Ershad announced his decision no to contest the polls scheduled for Jan 5. He also asked the Jatiya Party’s ministers in the Sheikh Hasina-led ‘all-party’ interim cabinet to resign.
Zafar, a former Prime Minister from 1989 to 1990 in Ershad’s government, was bitter about the former military dictator for having chosen to join the ‘all-party’ interim cabinet.
He had even called Ershad a ‘betrayer’, provoking his own expulsion from the party within two days. – bdnews24.com
