Dhaka – Kazi Zafar Ahmed, the sacked senior presidium member of Jatiya Party, on Thursday night alleged that UN Assistant Secretary General Oscar Fernández Taranco’s initiative for a compromise between the ruling and opposition camps has failed due to the government’s stubbornness.
“The opposition’s demand was for the postponement of the schedule for a lopsided election. It’s not been postponed yet. The dialogue is meaningless if the process for holding the election continues. We think the UN envoy’s mission has failed due to the government’s such obstinacy,” he said.
Zafar came up with the allegation while talking to reporters after a meeting with BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Earlier, he along with five other ‘reconstituted’ Jatiya Party leaders, including its secretary general Ghulam Moshi, presidium member TI Fazle Rabbi, went to the BNP chief’s Gulshan residence around 6pm and held an hour-long meeting with the opposition leader.
Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad removed Zafar from the party as he sharply criticised him after the party initially joined the election-time government and announced to contest the January-5 general election.
The following day, Zafar said he reconstituted the Jatiya Party committee by removing its chief HM Ershad. “I’m the chairman of the new committee and Ghulam Moshi its secretary general.”
Zafar said they would hold the special council of the reconstituted Jatiya Party on December 20. “I came here to invite the opposition leader to invite her to the council.”
Expressing solidarity with the opposition’s ongoing movement under the leadership of Khaleda Zia, they will be there on the streets to make the BNP-led 18-party’s action programmes a success. “I want to tell the Prime Minister that still there is time. You please resign and hand over the charge to the President to resolve the crisis.”- UNB
