6 Jamaat-Shibir men killed in clash with cops

Noakhali – Six activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student ing Islami Chhatra Shibir were killed and over 50 people, including five cops, injured in a fierce clash between law enforcers and activists of the Islamist party in Companyganj upazila headquarters on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Saiful,26, son of Nurul Islam of Rampur village and Russel,32, son of Shafiullah of Sirajpur village, Sajib,23, son of Abdur Rahman of Companyganj upazila headquarters Abdus Sattar, 22, Raihan, 21, and Matiur Rahman, 26, of the upazila Police Super of the district Anisur Rahman confirmed the death of the three people –Abdus Sattar, Raihan, and Matiur Rahman.
Companyganj upazila unit Jamaat general secretary Mosharraf Hossain said three other Shibir activists -– Sajib, Saiful and Russel – were also killed in the clash and they were buried at their respective villages.
Police and witnesses said Jamaat-Shibir activists brought out a procession in the upazila headquarters around 3:30 pm protesting the execution of Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah for his war crimes.
The clash broke out as police intercepted the procession when it came close to the upazila server station.
Being resisted by the law enforcers, the rowdy Jamaat-Shibir men exploded several crude bombs and pelted brickbats towards police, triggering the violent clash.
The clash continued for over two hours that left the six people dead on the spot and injured over 50 people. The injured were admitted to different local hospitals and clinics.
The Jamaat-Shibir activists torched the upazila land office, post office, Ansar VDP office, family planning office and BRDB office during the clash.
Meanwhile, unidentified criminals also set fire to Jamaat-Shibir-run Bashurhat Model High School around 5pm.
Additional police and BGB members have been deployed in the upazila headquarters to fend off further trouble. – UNB
