Huge wealth amassed in 5 years, ACC decision not to probe frustrating: TIB

Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB) has expressed deep concern over the statements of wealth of the candidates contesting the
January 5 election that show they have amassed huge wealth during the past five years. The candidates submitted their statements before the
Election Commission (EC).
The TIB also expressed its frustration and resentment on the decision of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) not to take any measure under the
pretext of destroying the election atmosphere.
The TIB strongly urged the ACC to take immediate measure against amassing of illegal wealth following the legal procedures.
TIB executive director Dr Iftekharuzzaman in a statement on Friday said it is totally illegal and unconstitutional to have massive wealth
beyond known sources of income.
“The possibility of establishing an accountable democratic good governance will be end forever if such irregularity cannot be
resisted,” he said.
Dr Zaman said the people do not elect their representatives to form government for misusing their power by sacrificing the interest of the
people. The corruption will spread widely at all the tires from the highest level of the state in future if those misuse of power cannot
bring to book, he added.
The TIB executive said the ACC commissioners not to play a role of B-team of the government and suggested them that they can expose their
willingness to combat corruption with honesty and courage at least for once to restore the confidence of people on the commission. – Staff
