BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday secured a six-month interim bail from the High Court involving a case for violence during an opposition-sponsored blockade.The bench of justices Quamrul Islam Siddiqui and Sheikh Mohammad Zakir Hossain granted the bail after hearing Fakhrul’s plea. The case was filed with the Kalabagan Police Station.
Fakhrul’s lawyer Ragib Rouf Chowdhury said all the obstacles had now been cleared to ensure his release as he was not shown arrested in any other cases.He said, “The court has granted six months of interim bail. Apart from that, the court has also issued a rule asking why the BNP’s Acting Secretary General should not be granted bail.”
Senior BNP leader Moudud Ahmed argued for Fakhrul during the hearing.
However, Sagir Hossain Leon, Fakhrul’s another lawyer, told bdnews24.com on Sunday that the BNP leader had been shown arrested in six cases. He has already secured bails in three of those cases from the High Court and the lower court has granted him bail in two other cases.
Fakhrul has been accused in almost all the 38 cases filed in Dhaka over the opposition-sponsored Dec 9 countrywide road blockade programme.
The police had detained him on Dec 10 in two cases filed with the Paltan and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police stations. The High Court on Jan 2 granted Fakhrul a six-month interim bail. The following day, police arrested him in two more cases filed with the Motijheel and Sutrapur police stations.
Meanwhile, the High court on Jan 27 issued an interim order asking authorities not to detain or harass the BNP leader by digressing from ‘legal procedures’.
The BNP leader secured bails in both cases. However, he was shown arrested in two others filed with the Kalabagan and Paltan police.
On Jan 31, a Dhaka court granted him bail in the case filed at the Paltan police station and threw out his bail plea in the Kalabagan case.bdnews24.com
