Discussion on safety of women held in Faridpur

A discussion meeting to ensure safe town for women under the theme of “Stop violence against women” organised by District police, community policing and local NGO RACINE was held Monday afternoon at the police line auditorium.

The discussion was presided over by Additional Police Super of Faridpur Bijoy Basak.

Speakers addressing the meeting said that out of the total population of 4 crore 41 lakh living in the urban areas of the country 2 crore 43 lakh are women.

With the industrialisation of towns and cities employment opportunities for men and women have been created thus the number of women has risen significantly but without any substantial safety for them.

Speakers said that the women folk most frequently come under various types repression and torture endangering their lives even. They said that the incidents of torture though happening in big numbers very few are reported.

Government have enacted tough laws to prevent repressions on women but a little number of offenders are punished because either the offenders are influential or they managed to escape using their social positions, the speakers disclosed. Under the present government the cases of repressions on women in outgoing year have been reduced in comparison to 2011 because of the vigilance of law enforcing agencies and active handling by the NGOs, they said.

However, all citizens must be aware of the safety of women and help creating congenial atmosphere in the society and at working places so that the women can get guarantee of safety. Additional Police Super Bijoy Basask in his address stressed the for creating awareness among the citizens about the safety of women and added that the police department of this district are very much alert and uncompromising in ensuring the safety of women.

He disclosed that the police of this district have taken punitive measures against the offenders of eve teasing, physical torture, murder after raping, dowry and acid throwers. He assured the audience that no act of brutality on women will go unpunished.

A paper on stop violence against women and depicting a picture of women repression in the country was also presented in the meeting by Supriya Dutta on behalf of RACINE. The meeting was addressed, among others, by BSS Correspondent Prof. Md. Shahjahan, Faridpur Diabetic Association secretary Prof. Shaikh Abdus Samad, retired police super Noor Mohammad Mollah, Kanaipur UP chairman Fakir Md. Belayet Hossain, Assistant police super ABM Zakir Hossain, RACINE executive director Asma Aktar Mukta, Pourshava councillor Abdul Jalil and women activist Prof. Shipra Roy.

2 persons detained with 8 hand bombs in Rajshahi RAJSHAHI, Dec 31, 2013 (BSS)- Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-5) detained two persons suspected with eight hand bombs in Rajshahi railway station area under Boalia Police Station in the city last (Monday) midnight.

On a tip-off, a team of the elite force conducted a sudden raid zero hours and seized the powerful bombs and arrested the two persons suspected.

Another RAB team conducted an anti-crime operation at Paikordal area under sadar Upapzila of Natore district and arrested one Nurul Islam with a foreign pistol, four rounds of bullets, one magzin and some lethal weapons Monday evening. -BSS, Faridpur
