5 gold smugglers held, 1340 tolas gold seized

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members arrested five members of an international gold smuggling racket, including its ringleader, from the city’s Uttara area on Wednesday.   The elite force members also seized a haul of 1,340 tolas of smuggled gold worth about Tk 5 crore from their possession. The arrested smugglers were identified as ringleader Mohammad Ali, Hossain Asgar Labu, Kamrul, Md Abu Jafar and Ahmed Jamil Tuki.   Of them, Kamrul is the junior security officer and Jafar Aircraft Sweeping Supervisor at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport while Tuki an Indian national.   Acting on a tip-off, a team of Rab-1 conducted separate drives in the area from Wednesday noon and arrested the smugglers along with huge gold.   Rab sources said the arrested syndicate members had long been involved in smuggling gold from abroad through the airport. – UNB
