STAFF REPORTER: BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday said the ruling Awami League has started its journey towards authoritarianism by abandoning all norms and morality of the democracy when the opposition was tying to establish the peace and democracy.
“The country has been thrown into darkness again in a planned manner. The pro-democratic and independent minded people of the country would never recognize and accept it as a legitimate government,” he said in a statement shortly after the new cabinet was sworn in under the leadership of Awami League president Sheikh Hasina.
The BNP leader claimed that 95 per cent of the people do not support this government.
He urged the government to resign immediately and hand over power to a non-party caretaker government to hold san inclusive elections participated by all political parties.
Fakhrul described the oath taking of the new cabinet a black day for Bangladesh and said an “inauspicious journey” of democracy started through taking oath of the “immoral and illegal” government.
He said it has buried the democracy along with its spirits.
“An autocratic government has been imposed upon the people of the country through a voter less and lopsided polls,” he said.
Meanwhile, BNP chairperson and 18-party leader Khaleda Zia did not turn up at oath taking ceremony of the new cabinet at Bangabhaban on Sunday.
Earlier, the Cabinet Division sent a letter to the BNP chairperson inviting her to attend the oath-taking ceremony of the 49-member new cabinet led by Sheikh Hasina.
