Saleha Munir, mother of journalist Sagar Sarowar, who was killed along with his wife Meherun Runi two years ago, has demanded justice for all slain journalists. “My only request to you all, don’t stop your movement. Carry on your movement for justice for those journalists who have been killed,” she appealed to mediapersons on Tuesday.
Saleha was speaking at a memorial meeting of the late journalist couple Sagor and Runi at the Dhaka Reporters Unity auditorium.
The auditorium has been is named after the couple.Maasranga Television News Editor Sagar and ATN Bangla Senior Reporter Runi were brutally murdered in their East Rajabazar residence on Feb 11, 2012.
The couple is survived by their six-year-old son Megh.
Despite government assurances, the mystery behind the murder is yet to be solved and the murderers are yet to be identified and brought to justice, although two years have passed.
“I will demand justice until I die, I want justice for my Megh,” said Saleha Munir on Tuesday.
She blamed the government for failing to identify the killers and arrest them. She suspected that attempts were being made to hush up the Sagar-Runi murder investigation.
Addressing the journalists at the memorial, she said, “You were separated recently, but now I am told that you all are together again. I’m happy to hear that. I am hopeful, carry on with your movement to get justice for Sagar and Runi. Go for a hunger strike if necessary.”
She urged the journalists to carry on the movement for Megh.
The six-year-old was brought before the microphone at the memorial several times, but he said he did not want to say anything.
Meanwhile, Dhaka Reporters Unity President Shahed Chowdhury announced that a day-long token hunger strike will be held in front of DRU on Mar 31.
He said they will be forced to resort to a tougher agitation if their demand was not met by Mar 31. – bdnews24.com
