Secretary of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) M Faizur Rahman Chowdhury on Monday claimed that the ongoing probe into the wealth of sitting and former ministers and lawmakers is not an eyewash.
“You (journalists) will see the results of our inquiry. We are not eye specialists and the inquiry is not an eyewash. Wait and see,” he said at the monthly press briefing held at the ACC media centre.The ACC secretary told a questioner that a criminal always claims that he is innocent and not involved in crimes or corruption, but it is the duty of the court and the law enforcement agency to dig out what involvement he has in the allegations.
He made this comment a day after ruling party lawmaker Abdur Rahman Badi, one of the seven sitting and fomrer ministers and lawmakers wealth of those are being investigated by the commisison, described himself as a victim of “media conspiracy”.
After quized by the commision on Sunday, Bodi also claimed that he has no illegal wealth.
Replying to another question, Chowdhury said the commission was carrying out probes into the allegations of illegally accumulated wealth of at least 10 sitting and former MPs and six secretaries.
In January the ACC approved filing 18 cases against 35 persons, 15 of them government officials, 11 businessmen, a public representative and eight others.
The ACC submitted 38 charge sheets in courts against 125 persons, 36 of them government officials, 32 businessmen, four public representatives and 53 others in the same period.
According to monthly report of the commisison, ACC also dropped 21 cases in January.
Besides, the trials in six cases were completed in January. The accused in two cases got punishments and in four cases the accused were acquitted, said the report. – Staff Reporter
