The Bashundhara Group’s East-West Property Group lodged a defamation case against seven persons including Jamuna Group Chairman Nurul Islam Babul on Monday demanding a compensation of Tk eleven billion for running a false and fake report in the Daily Jugantor.
Dhaka’s Joint District Judge Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan heard the complaint and directed defendants to submit their written objection on March 30.The other defendants are: Babul’s wife Salma Islam MP, his son Shamim Islam, the Daily Jugantor Executive Editor Saiful Islam, Jamuna Printing and Publications, the Daily Jugantor, and Jamuna Future Park.
Bashundhara Group Chairman and Managing Director (MD) Ahmed Akbar Sobhan filed the case. The case statement says that on February 9, Bashundhara Group filed a defamation case accusing the Jugantor owner Nurul Islam Babul, editor Salma Islam and three others. Group’s Senior Deputy Managing Director Md Belayet Hossain filed the case with Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka.
The case record further says that on October 28 of last year, the Daily Jugantor run a false and baseless report on the first page of the daily which has reported that ‘Bashundhara grabbing property worth Tk 500 billion, Minister and Secretary were accused of taking bribe amounting to Tk 30 billion.’
Similarly, on October 29 of last year, the daily printed another false and defaming report against the Bashundhara to gain their ill and irrational business interest, the case record said. – Court Correspondent
