Pro-BNP Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya (Blue Panel) swept the Dhaka Bar Association election for the session 2014-2015 bagging 15 –all but one executive posts plus six posts of members – out of 25 posts including President, Vice Presidents and General Secretary, and beating defeated Awami League backed panel.
On the other hand, the ruling party-backed candidates won, nine out of 15 positions of members. BNP-backed blue penal won nine positions of President, two Vice Presidents, General Secretary, Senior Assistant General Secretary, Assistant General Secretary, Library Secretary, Cultural Secretary and Office Secretary, and six posts of member.Md Shamsuzzaman, a Blue penal candidate for the position of Treasurer is ahead in the race. The result of this post is likely to be announced on Saturday. The two-day election ended on Thursday at 5 pm. Of the 14,310 lawyer voters 8,175 voters used their voting right in the election of the biggest bar of the country. Advocate Abus Sabur, a former President of Dhaka Bar discharged the duties of the Chief Election Commissioner in the election.
Blue penal President candidate Md Mohoshin Miah got 4,388 votes while ruling party supported White penal candidate Sydur Rahman Manik got 3,190 votes. Blue penal candidate Md Rezaul Karim Nizam defeated While penal candidate Md Tarique Hossain. Nizam secured 3,939 votes while Tarique got 3,229 votes. For the position of Vice President Blue penal’s Md Jahir Rayhan Jasim got 3,901 votes while his nearest rival Md Munjur Alam Munju of the rival White penal got 3,368 votes. Blue penal’s Md Mosleh Uddin Jasim was elected General Secretary with 3,626 and his rival Md Mosharraf Hossain White penal lost the race with 3,316 votes.
Mohammed Abu Yousuf Sarkar was elected Senior Assistant General Secretary, Mohammad Arifur Rahman Ranju Assistant General Secretary, Ahammad Ullah Aman library secretary, Rafiza Alam Lucky Cultural Secretary and Mohammad Shahid Gazi was elected Office Secretary of Dhaka Bar.Their nearest rivals Md Abdus Salam Khan, Mohammad Shahadat Hossain Bhuiyan, Benoy Kumar Gose Bitu, Afroza Farhana Ahmed Orange and Mohammad Abdul Hai Mamun respectively of White penal vie against them.
A record number of 71 candidates contested the elections to 25 posts this year.
Chief Election Commissioner Abdus Sabur told reporters that the results for the post of treasurer would be announced on Saturday after recounting the votes as the White Panel-backed candidate had alleged irregularities in counting.
Blue Panel’s Mohammad Shamsuzzaman was also clearly ahead of Makbul Hossain of the White Panel in the post of treasurer.
In the polls of Dhaka Bar Association for session 2013-14, BNP-Jamaat backed Blue penal got 13 posts including General Secretary while the present ruling party backed White got 12 positions including the post of President. – Court Correspondent
