Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam on Monday said BNP’s participation in the upazila polls is questionable as its chairperson Khaleda Zia herself does not believe in the upazila system.
“BNP doesn’t believe in upazila system. Assuming power in 1991, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia had scrapped the upazila law and suspended all the chairmen elected through the then upazila elections,” he said.Ashraf, also the LGRD Minister, came up with the comments while addressing the council of Mirpur thana unit Awami League at Golartek Eidgah Maidan.
“Why Khaleda Zia’s party who doesn’t believe in the upazila system has taken part in the upazila polls,” he questioned.
The ruling party spokesman said their government has formed many new city corporations in the last five years as their party believes in the local government system.
“We want to make the local government bodies more dynamic and functional so that the development activities can be carried out efficiently,” he added.
Ashraf claimed that they have ensured balanced development in the country by turning the upazila law into a time-suiting one. – UNB
