Replying to a written query from M Abdul Latif (Chittagong-11) in Parliament whether the government has taken measure to hold polls of all the tiers of the local government – Union Parishad, Upazila Parishad, Zila Parishad, Municipality and City Corporation- on party basis.Responding to a starred question of Jatiya Party MP Pir Fazlur Rahman (Sunamganj-4) when election of bifurcated Dhaka City Corporations would be held, Ashraf told the House that according to the clause 35 of the Local Government (City Corporation) Act 2009, it is the responsibility of the Election Commission to conduct polls of city corporations.
“The commission will arrange the polls of the city corporations to elect mayor and councilors following the law,” the minister added.
On Monday Syed Ashraful Islam was quoted as saying the government initiated a move to change laws to hold local government elections on partisan basis. – UNB
