BCL calls indefinite strike at RU

Rajshahi University (RU) unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Friday announced an indefinite strike on the campus protesting the killing of its man Rustam Ali Akand. RU unit BCL general secretary Towhid Al Tuhin made the announcement in the afternoon. Rustam Ali Akand, 24, joint secretary of BCL RU Suhrawardy Hall unit and a final year honours student of Political Science Department, was shot to death by miscreants in his room at the dormitory on the university campus on Friday noon. He hailed from Sundarganj upazila of Gaibandha district. Protesting the killing, BCL leaders and activists brought out a procession on the campus. Meanwhile, Dhaka city (both north and south) units will bring out procession in the capital on Saturday in protest against the killing. Witnesses said a group of miscreants stormed into the room No 230 of the hall around 1:30pm and opened fire on Rustam, leaving him critically injured. Hearing the sound of firing, other students rushed to the spot and took Rustam to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead. RU unit BCL president Mizanur Rahman Rana claimed that Shibir was behind Rustam’s killing. However, Ziauddin Bablu, publicity affairs secretary of RU unit Shibir, rejected BCL’s claim, saying they are making evil attempt to shift their misdeeds on Shibir. – UNB
