At least 10 policemen were injured in a clash with the activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, pro-Jamaat-e-Islami student organisation, at Uttar Kathaltali village in Barlekha upazila on Sunday night.
Police and locals said a group of Shibir activists, numbering 15-20, were holding a meeting at a house at Uttar Kathaltali village around 9:00pm.On information, local leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) confined them there and informed police.When a team from Barlekha Police Station rushed to the spot, the Shibir men through loudspeaker of the local mosque announced that a robber gang entered the village.The Shibir men threw brick chips at policemen, leaving 10 policemen, including Sub-inspector Qazi Ziauddin, injured.Police brought the situation under control by firing 10 rounds of bullet.Later, police detained five Shibir men–Abdul Ahad, 22, Delwar, 24, Nizam, 28, Saik, 25, and Shah Alam, 18, — from the spot.Officer-in-charge of Barlekha Police Station Abul Hossain said Shibir men gathered at the house to plan subversive activities in the area. -UNB, Sylhet
