An oil wholesaler has been killed by muggers at Sulukia village in Sadar upazila of the district.
The deceased was identified as Arif Hossain, 28, son of Abul Khayer of Kalitara village in the upazila.
Victim’s family members said Arif went out of their house by his motorcycle around 11 am on Thursday to collect money from his clients. But he did not return home.
Arif’s father Abul Khayer filed a general diary (GD) with Sudharam Model Police Station on Thursday evening in this regard.
In the meantime, police arrested two young men –- Piyash, 25, and Sumon, 25, — along with a motorcycle from a Baishakhi fair adjacent to Wapda Bazar around 10:30pm after they engaged in an altercation with some fair organising committee members.
When the two youths were being taken to the police station through the Kalitara village along with the motorcycle, locals claimed that the bike belonged to Arif.
Later in the face of interrogation, Piyash and Sumon confessed to police that they snatched the bike from Arif after killing him.
Following their information, police recovered the body of Arif from under the ground behind Piyash’s house at the Sulukia village around 3am and sent it to Noakhali Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, said Nizam Uddin, officer-in-charge (Investigation) of Sudharam Model Police Station.
Police also arrested three women from the house at that time, added the OC.
Meanwhile, angry relatives and locals attacked the house of Piyash and torched it around 11:30am on Friday.
On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. –UNB, Noakhali
