Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard and fisheries department in a joint drive seized 925 kilograms of jatka (hilsa fry) from the Dhaleshwari River in Sadar upazila early Wednesday.
Fisheries officer M Rasheduzzaman said that acting on a tip-off, a joint team of Coast Guard and the district fisheries department conducted a search in two Dhaka-bound launches and seized the ‘jatkas’ around 3 am.The owners of the hilsa fry, however, managed to flee the scene sensing the presence of the team, Rasheduzzaman said, adding the seized hilsa fry were distributed to local orphanages and madrasas.Currently, an eight-month ban on catching ‘jatka’ from November 1 to June 30 in all hilsa resources regions of the country are in effect. -BSS, Munshiganj
