Alleged fugitve killed in ‘gunfight’

An alleged fugitive accused in the murder of a policeman was killed in a ‘gunfight between his cohorts and law enforcers’ in Maheshkhali upazila on Tuesday evening.
The deceased was Abdur Rashid, 35, a resident of Hoainak village in the upazila. He was the prime accused in the sub-inspector Paresh Karbari killing case, police said.The SI was killed in a gunfight with criminals at Kalagazipara in Maheskhali on January 18, 2012.
Being tipped off that Rashid was staying at Hoainak Bazar, a team of police conducted a drive there around 7pm last evening.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the ‘criminals opened fire on them’, forcing police to retaliate that triggered a gun battle.
‘Rashid was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot’, said officer-in-charge of Maheshkhali Police Station Alamgir Hossain.
Three policemen were also injured in the gunfight, he said, adding that Rashid was accused in 4-5 cases filed against him. – UNB
