72-hr hartal against ‘crossfire’ deaths, maiming, arrests: 20-Party

The Bnp-led 20-party alliance on Friday called a 72-hour nationwide hartal beginning at 6am on Sunday till 6am on Wednesday protesting “killing of many leaders and workers in ‘crossfire’, maiming and injuring some of them in shooting and ‘mass arrests of people’ and demanding restoration of democracy through right of franchise and release of all political prisoners, senior leaders, including BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and others.

This was announced by BNP Joint Secretary General Salahuddin Ahmed in a statement on late Friday evening.
Alliances sources claimed at least a dozen workers of Bnp and other alliance partners during the ongoing blockade that began on 06 January last. Earlier in the day, Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student body of 20-party’s key partner Jamaat-e-Islami, called a 24-hour countrywide hartal for Sunday protesting the killing and arrest of it leaders and activists.
In a press statement, Shibir president Abdul Jabbar announced the shutdown programme that will begin at 6 am Sunday and end at 6 am on Monday.
Meanwhile, Rajshahi unit Chhatra Shibir also called a 48-hour hartal in eight districts of the division from Sunday protesting what it said the killing of its Rajshahi University unit leader by police.
The 20-party also had enforced hartal for five consecutive days from Sunday last week.- Staff Reporter
