Adaptation to climate change suggested for reducing disaster risks

Officials and experts at a post-rally discussion here today suggested for taking comprehensive steps to adapt to climate change for reducing risks of natural disasters and calamities.

They forwarded the suggestion at the discussion organised by the district administration in association with different government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in observance of the International Day for Disaster Reduction- 2017.

Earlier, a colourful rally, participated by officials and experts, students, teachers, public representatives, socio-cultural activists, community leaders, professionals and elite, was brought out in the city.

Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Wahiduzzaman attended the discussion held at Banyan Tree premises on Zila School ground as the chief guest with District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Faridul Haque in the chair.

Divisional Deputy Director of the Fire Service and Civil Defense Asaduzzaman Sheikh and Rangpur unit secretary of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Shah Mohammad Nabi Ullah Panna addressed the occasion as special guests.

Faridul Haque in his inaugural speech discussed about various types of natural disasters and statistics of damages and forwarded suggestions to reduce disaster risks everywhere, including urban areas.

Asaduzzaman Sheikh narrated the government efforts taken to reduce disaster risks through dissemination of information and warnings, adequate early preparedness, training and emergency response management systems.

Shah Mohammad Nabi Ullah Panna stressed on adopting comprehensive efforts and early preparedness to reduce disaster risks amid changing climate that triggers to increasing extent of natural disasters and calamities.

The chief guest laid emphasis on engaging comprehensive efforts for taking early preparedness, adapting to climate change and disseminating knowledge among common people to reduce risks of natural disasters, reports BSS, Rangpur.
