Addict mother ‘sells newborn’ for Tk 5,000 to buy drug

Dhaka – A drug-addicted mother has allegedly sold her 33-day-old daughter for Tk 5,000 at Alamnagar Churipatti slum in Bangladesh’s noathern city of Rangpur to collect drugs.Locals said Jamila Khatun, a mother of seven children, sold her baby girl, Akhter, to childless Mosharraf Hossain of the capital through a broker on November 22 after she failed to collect money to buy drugs.
Officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station ABM Jahidul Islam said they have launched a drive to rescue the child. “We’ve already communicated with Mosharraf who lives at Rayer Bazar in the capital. He agreed to return the baby,” he said.
