All should end violence, move to democratic space: US envoy

The newly appointed US ambassador to Bangladesh, Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat, Tuesday called upon everyone for “playing a role to stop the ongoing violence and to move into democratic space to resolve the situation”.
“Bangladesh is blessed with democracy and there is a space within that democracy to resolve differences … and everyone has a role to play to stop that violence,” she told journalists after emerging from an over hour-long meeting with Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali at his office here.Describing the present situation that is going on in Bangladesh as an “absolutely tragic” one, Bernicat said they reiterate their call from Washington that everyone plays a role to stop violence and to move into the democratic space that Bangladesh is blessed to have.
The US envoy said she is delighted to meet the foreign minister so soon after her arrival and they talked about how deep and broad Bangladesh and US relations.
“We both are committed to increasing that even more, people have so much in common,” she added.
Earlier, European Union ambassador in Dhaka Pierre Mayaudon has called for an end to the ongoing violence targeting what he said the innocent people in the most barbaric manner.
“We cannot accept the unacceptable…these vile acts of violence must stop,” he said following his visit to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) this morning. – BSS
