State Minister for Post and Telecommunications Tarana Halim yesterday said those who are using social media like facebook through alternative servers are violation of law.“Information of all such facebook users is with the intelligent departments. Many of them are being arrested by intelligent agencies,” she said while talking to reporters prior to join a meeting on her ministry on progress and development evaluation at Bangladesh Secretariat.
Tarana said those who are using facebook through alternative servers are under intelligent surveillance.
She, however, acknowledged that it is not possible to close the using of facebook without shutting down the internet.
“But we don’t want to shutdown the internet fully,” she added.
On a question as to when users would be able to use social media like facebook, she said it would be opened whenever the home ministry wants.
“Ensuring security of the state and its people is very important to us…People should extend their cooperation to our endeavour,” she added.
Post and telecommunications secretary Foyzur Rahman Chowdhury was present on the occasion.
The government has kept a number of social media including facebook and viber since November 18.
However a number of people including some government officials are allegedly suing facebok through alternative servers.
