The death of anther four persons in landslide in Bandarban has brought into focus a cucial question as to whether our hills are safe, or something has gone wrong disturbing their safety.
In the last few decades the hills have been overused as well as abused. This is everybody’s knowledge. Indiscriminate tree felling and hill cutting are the example of the abuse of the hills in all the hill districts.Four people, including a child, were killed, two went missing and three others injured in a landslide, caused apparently by incessant rainfall for the last nine days at Hospital Para in Lama upazila early Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Amena Begum, 30, Rojina Begum, 30, Sagar, 14 and Saddam Hossain, 5.
Abu Jafar, acting deputy commissioner of the district, said the incident occurred around 3 am as a heavy chunk of mud collapsed from a hill on three houses at its foot, leaving four people killed on the spot and three others injured.
Besides, two people went missing in the disaster. The injured were rushed to Lama Upazila Health Complex.
On information, a team of firefighting unit rushed in and conducted the rescue operation.
The authorities concerned are alking about stoppage of hill cutting for three decades now but have succeedded to ahieve lillte. Cutting of hills at their bases for landfilling elsewhere weaken the stability of the hills. Denudation weakens the capacity of the soil to absorb as well take the pressure of the run-off.
Wihout taking care of these visibly causative factors plus some extra protective measures bit would never be possible to prevent landslide. – New Desk
