The government is planning to start dredging the Mongla-Ghusiakhali channel, to ease navigation to Kolkata, as early as next week, said Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan.
The channel is vital to both Bangladesh and India because all the ships to and from Kolkata will be using the route, he said at a programme in Madaripur on Saturday. The vessels pass through the Sundarbans since the channel was closed seven to eight years ago, said the minister, which was harming the forest’s biodiversity.
The channel has already been surveyed, he said.
“Hopefully we can start digging from next week to ease navigation between Bangladesh and Kolkata.”- bdnews24.com
