Bangladesh coronavirus cases rise to 51

Two more people have been tested positive in Bangladesh for coronavirus in the last 24 hours, raising the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 52, said the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) on Tuesday.

“In the past 24 hours, IEDCR has tested 140 samples and two people have been found positive for coronavirus infection. So far, 1,602 people have been tested,” IEDCR Director Prof Meerjady Sabrina Flora said at an online press briefing.

Both of the infected people are male, aged 57 and 55 respectively.”One of the newly-infected is a Saudi Arabia-returnee while we’re still collecting information about another who had no travel history,” said Prof Flora.

Meanwhile, she said, six more patients have recovered. “One of the six is aged above 70, four are around 30 and another is aged above 40. Four of the six newly-infected patients are male and the rest are female, including one nurse.”

The IEDCR Director assured that those who died recently in different places of the country with coronavirus-like symptoms were not infected.

“We’ve collected samples from the bodies of those and upon testing none were found positive…so we shouldn’t think it is COVID-19 case only if someone dies with fever,” she said.

No new death from Covid-19 was confirmed across the country in the past 24 hours keeping the total death toll at five.Currently, 75 people are in isolation and 38 are in institutional quarantine, she said. The IEDCR hotlines received 2509 calls in the past 24 hours regarding the Coronavirus.

Earlier, DGHS Director (MIS) Dr Md Habibur Rahman said the testing for identifying coronavirus infection will be carried out from 28 organisations by April 20.He also said the government currently has 334,270 PPEs and 99,000 test-kits in stock.
