Bangladesh Games to go on till official notification is issued

DHAKA—The Bangabandhu 9th Bangladesh Games will continue until the government notification over the nationwide lockdown is issued, said Games Steering Committee chairman Bashir Ahmed Mamun.

His comment came just after Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader declared that a seven-day lockdown is set to be imposed across the country from Monday to contain the spread of coronavirus.

“The decision on the games will be taken in consultation with the Ministry of Health after the notification is issued. Since the final of many events are on April 4, the game will continue until that time,” Bashir Ahmed Mamun said here today.

Honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the Bangabandhu Bangladesh Games last Thursday through a virtual platform. The name of this year’s games has been changed to Bangabandhu Bangladesh Games to celebrate the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

A total of 5,300 athletes from 31 different sports disciplines are vying for 1,271 medals in 378 events.

Bangladesh Olympic Association, the organizers of the game has taken the games across the country as it has been taking place across 29 separate venues, which included seven divisional venues.BSS
