Bangladesh Islamic Party hosts iftar mohfil

The Bangladesh Islamic Party hosted an iftar mohfil at the Imperial Hotel convention centre in the city on Friday. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alangir, acting secretary general of BNP, was the chief guest at the function which was presided over by Advocate Abdul Mobin, chairman of the party. In his address Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that the ruling Bangladesh Awami League was undermining democratic norms and practices in the same way its leaders did during the first half of the 1970s.
He said that opposition political parties and their workers were facing repression, murder and abduction as they faced in the past when 30,000 political workers were killed. The younger generations have forgotten those days when misrule had thrown the country into famine prompting then US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger to call the country an international basket case.
As in those days first Special Powers Act, the emergency and finally one-party rule was established undermining the opposition, the present government has cornered the opposition to strengthen its grip on power. Plunder of resources has gone to such an extent that not only lakhs of small investors lost their savings from stock markets, but also thousands of crores of taka were looted from banks, and the World Bank had to cancel the loan agreement for the construction of the Padma Bridge.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said today 42 years after the achievement of independence the people are once again faced with a question of their identity. Many important decisions taken on the basis of consensus have been unsettled putting the country into a most dangerous situation in its history, he added.
The iftar mohfil was also addressed by Khandakar Lutfur Rahman, secretary general of Jagpa, Fariduzzaman Farhad of NPP, Muslim League President Nurul Huq Majumder and secretary General Kazi Abul Khair, chairman of NAP Bhasani, Sheikh Anwarul Huq, chairman of Labour Party Dr. Mostafizur Rahman Iran, Golam Mortuza, chairman, and Alamgir Majumder, secretary general of NDP, former MP Adv Ferdous Aktar Wahida and secretary general of Islamic party Abdur Rashid Prodhan among others.
